"Holding our hosting and critical data hostage"
Most owners don't think about website maintenance until something stops working. These are the moments we found again and again in public reviews.
"...we discovered they had shut down completely, with no notice or communication. ... holding our hosting and critical data hostage."
Business owner, Trustpilot UK review
"I pay £30 a month for them to host it ... I don't actually know if they own my site or not, I went into this naively and I don't think there's a contract."
UK business owner, Mumsnet, 2021
"They verbally said it was 6 month contract and then changed to 12 months and then another 2 months notice!"
Australian business owner, public review
The fix is not only technical. It's who holds the keys, what you're actually paying for each month, and how easily you can leave.
3 steps to a site someone is actually watching
Check
We run a health check on your current site: what it's built on, what's out of date, where backups go today, who holds the domain. You stop wondering whether anyone is looking after it.
Take over
We move backups off the server, set up uptime alerts, and make sure the domain, hosting and analytics logins are in your name. You no longer have to dig through old emails for a password.
Run
Every week we update, test and back up. Every month you get a short note on what we did. You don't have to remember any of it.
No 12-month contract, no surprise invoices, no learning WordPress
Website care plans are simple to describe and easy to sell badly. "Unlimited edits" is a common line; one US hosting company's guide notes these offers are "typically capped at 20–30 minutes per request". So we state minutes, not "unlimited", and we state what isn't included.
Updates that don't break your Book buttons
- Weekly updates. WordPress core, plugins and theme, or the equivalent for your platform. Static sites need far fewer updates, so on those the plan focuses on hosting, backups and edits.
- A backup before every update. If an update breaks something, we roll back first and investigate second.
- A check after every update. We click through your Book buttons, phone links and enquiry form, because those are the parts that make you money.
Backups you can actually restore
- Daily off-site backups, kept 30 days. Stored away from your web server, so one failure doesn't take both.
- A restore test every quarter (Care Plus). We restore a backup to a test copy and check it works. A backup nobody has tested is a hope, not a backup.
Someone notices when it goes down, before your customers do
- Uptime monitoring every 5 minutes, with an alert to us when the site doesn't answer.
- Security in front of the site. Firewall and caching layer (Cloudflare, free plan, included in Care), malware scans, and login protection.
- Renewal watch. SSL certificate and domain renewal dates tracked, so the site doesn't vanish because a card expired.
Small changes done for you, in minutes you can see
- Edits each month (Care Plus: 60 minutes). New price, new photo, holiday hours, a new staff member. You email or message us; we do it.
- Response within 1 business day for requests, faster for "the site is down".
- A plain-English report (Care Plus). What we updated, what we fixed, uptime for the month, and the numbers that matter: calls, Book clicks and enquiries.

Prices in: US$ · A$ · £. Prices exclude GST/VAT. ATAVORA invoices from Vietnam. Business customers in Australia and the UK are not charged GST/VAT by us; your accountant can tell you if you need to account for it. US clients: we provide a W-8BEN-E. If we didn't build your site (WordPress or static), there's a one-off onboarding fee first: £149. See all our prices in one place.
First-month promise. If you're not happy after the first month, email us before your second month starts. We stop straight away; on All-in you don't pay the rest of the 3-month minimum.
All-in buy-out rule. The website becomes yours after 12 months of All-in. If you leave sooner, you can buy it outright for the Starter price (£1,090) minus £90 for every month already paid; the remaining balance is printed on every invoice.
Is there a catch?
Yes. For us to look after your site we need:
- an admin login to the website, or the hosting account, which we keep in a password manager and never share,
- access to the domain settings, or someone who can give it to us,
- one person on your side who can reply to a "can we update this?" message within a few days.
What a care plan can't do: fix a site that doesn't bring enquiries in the first place. That's a design or visibility problem, and the Leak Check will tell you which. If you need a new site, see small business web design.
We never change how your site looks or what it says without asking you first.
What you own: the site, the domain and every login
- Your domain stays registered in your name. If an old supplier holds it, we help you move it.
- Your website files and database are yours. On request we send a full copy within 5 business days.
- Backups are of your site, for you. If you leave, you can take the latest one with you.
- Analytics and Search Console sit in your Google account; we're added as users.
- Hosting: included in Care, on ATAVORA's servers. If you leave, we hand over the files and help you move for free.
Leaving is simple: 30 days' notice, we hand over the latest backup and every login, and remove our access. No exit fee.
How we report: the work, plus calls, bookings and enquiries
- The work. Updates done, backups taken, uptime for the month, anything we fixed.
- Calls. Taps on your phone number on the website (a GA4 event). A tap is not an answered call; if you share your call log, we compare.
- Bookings. Clicks on each Book button. GA4 counts the click through to your booking platform, not the completed booking. Completed bookings come from your booking platform's own report, which you can send us or share read-only.
- Enquiries. Form submissions, with spam filtered.
Essential gets a short status email; Care Plus and All-in get the one-page report.
Who looks after your site
Hai Pham, founder of ATAVORA, is accountable for your plan and is the person you contact. ATAVORA is a small team in Vietnam led by Hai Pham. We work during Australian business hours; for UK and US clients most work happens while you sleep, and calls are booked in your morning. Much of the routine work happens outside your business hours, when a short outage hurts least. More: about ATAVORA.
Questions about website maintenance services
What do website maintenance services actually include?
Across the plans we looked at in Australia and the US, the same list repeats: core, plugin and theme updates; daily or weekly backups; uptime monitoring; malware scans; a monthly report; some minutes of edits; and a promised response time. What changes between providers is how many minutes you get, whether backups are tested, and whether hosting is in the price. Our table above shows all three.
How much should I pay for website maintenance?
Published plans for small business websites start at about AUD 79 to 499 a month in Australia, USD 35 to 699 in the US, and £19 to £79 at entry level in the UK. The cheapest are usually fully automated: updates run, but nobody checks your Book buttons afterwards.
Do you look after websites you didn't build?
Yes, if it's a WordPress or static site. There's a one-off onboarding fee of £149 so we know what we're taking on.
Do you only work with WordPress?
WordPress is the most common, and we also look after lightweight static sites. We don't take on sites built on hosted builders like Wix or Squarespace.
What if an update breaks my site?
We take a backup before every update and check your key pages afterwards. If something breaks, we roll back first, then fix the cause.
What if my site gets hacked?
We restore from the last clean backup and close the hole we find. Care Plus includes one hack clean-up a year; on Essential we quote the clean-up before we start.
Can I cancel?
Yes. Care plans run month to month with 30 days' notice and no exit fee. All-in has a 3-month minimum, stated next to its price. If you're not happy after the first month, email us before your second month starts and we stop straight away.
If you're in the UK or the US, what do I pay?
UK prices are in pounds: Essential £49, Plus £89 a month, set for the UK market rather than converted. Prices exclude GST/VAT. ATAVORA invoices from Vietnam. Business customers in Australia and the UK are not charged GST/VAT by us; your accountant can tell you if you need to account for it. US clients: we provide a W-8BEN-E. US prices are in dollars: £49 and £89. Many US providers include hosting in the price; ours is included in Care too.
